Learning This Will Change Your Life
About six years ago, I woke up in a panic.
Another one.
As anxious energy rushed through my body at 2 a.m., I decided to put it to use by cleaning my house and watching some saved videos from Sarah Baldwin, a somatic practitioner who had released a series explaining the nervous system. I remember knowing somehow that it was essential for me to understand this, even though it felt a little complicated at the time.
“The stories that race through your mind when you’re anxious or depressed aren’t true. They’re just your brain trying to make sense of your nervous system’s state. Your state creates your story. Shift your nervous system, shift your thoughts. If you shift your nervous system, you can change your whole life.”
Man did my life need changing. That night, I booked a discovery call with her—at 2 a.m.
Over the next few years, I worked with Sarah off and on, and my life did change. I became certified in nervous-system-informed coaching and have since partnered with so many clients to help them shift their own lives as well.
I often talk about working with creatives, and people sometimes protest, “But I’m not creative, is this work for me?”
Yes. Because… everyone is creative.
Creativity isn’t just about art or music—it’s actually a nervous system state. Did you know creativity is listed as a core characteristic of everybody’s most authentic self? (Dr. Richard Schwartz, The 8 C’s of the Self.)
If you’re bringing anything into the world that didn’t exist before—your own healing, a healthier family than the one you came from, a business, a book, an idea, a song—you are a creative.
And you owe it to yourself—and the world around you—to understand your nervous system.
Why this matters
Everything—every thought, every interaction, every behavior—is filtered through how safe or unsafe your nervous system believes you are.
This happens automatically, which is why it can feel like you have no say in how your body responds to the world. That’s why so many people feel frustrated or defeated by their anxiety and depression.
But when you realize that anxiety and depression are forms of self-protection—and that you can learn to shift your nervous system state—your entire experience of life can change.
From survival to self-leadership
I know what it’s like to live in a body that feels like it’s drowning in self-protection—the heaviness, the hopelessness, the sense of being trapped. It’s a real experience I don’t wish on anyone… and yet, it’s incredibly common.
But I also know what it’s like to heal. To expand your capacity. To become, as Sarah says, “the active operator of your own nervous system” instead of your nervous system operating you.
And I can honestly tell you—there doesn’t seem to be a ceiling to how much creativity, connection, joy, and inspiration you can experience when you’re doing this work.
